Winter Outdoor Skills Competition!

This is a traditional Scouting Winter Camping and Outdoor Skills competition.  Each patrol/crew must build and bring a wheeled Klondike sled or a wheeled miniature Conestoga or Prairie Schooner Wagon with their trademark canvas bonnets!  Participants can serve as the draft animal of their choice: dogs, horses, oxen, or mules – depending on the vehicle they bring!  Patrols/teams will load the wagons/sleds with their personal and patrol equipment and pull them through the competition course using a map and compass to find each station.  Competition Stations will be named after famous Gold Rush towns.  Patrols/teams will receive “gold” nuggets for their score at each station.

Some events will be competitive, some will be instructional.  Each station will time and test patrols on their team work, winter camping skills, Scouting knowledge and their problem solving ability. Details in the Klondike Leader’s Guide on our website this winter.

  • Dutch Oven Cooking- Patrols may provide a dinner entrée cooked in a Dutch Oven with recipe to be judged. Entry must be brought to the Dining Hall by 6 PM and must be of sufficient portion for three judges to sample. This is a Troop competition – 1 entry per troop.

The Klondike Sled, Prairie Schooner, and Conestoga Wagon

Every competing patrol/team needs a wheeled Conestoga or Prairie Schooner Wagon or a Klondike Derby Sled with wheels. These should be fashioned to look somewhat like the traditional wheeled Conestoga or Prairie Schooner Wagons, with their canvas weather tarp and frame, or Klondike Sleds with wheels.

Conestoga Wagons

Conestoga Wagons were huge freight wagons with an arching weather cover or bonnet developed in Pennsylvania by descendants of German colonists and used for hauling freight throughout the East and on the Santa Fe Trail to New Mexico.

Prairie Schooners

The Conestoga wagons were too heavy for their draft animals on most rugged western trails. The much smaller Prairie Schooners were developed specifically for overland travel and saw wide use throughout many of America’s western migrations to the latest Gold Rush fields. Many travelers simply retrofitted their standard farm wagons with a canvas bonnet. The popular  Trek Carts from the early days of Scouting were a single-axle adaptation of the famous frontier wagons and their trademark canvas bonnets.

Klondike Sleds

In the winter in the far north frontier, their only means of travel was by dog team. During the Klondike Gold Rush dog sleds were used for transport, freight and mail delivery. Winter travel in the North Country without a dog sled was almost impossible.

Longhorn Council,  in partnership with ECSI (Emergency Care and Safety Institute), is sponsoring First Aid Training at the Longhorn Activity Center, 5350 Basswood Boulevard, Fort Worth. ECSI training courses were developed in association with the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Each WFA attendee at a Longhorn Activity Center weekend class will receive one $50 off coupon for a Longhorn Council summer camp. The coupon must be redeemed within one year and can be used only by a member of the attendee’s unit.

Cub Scout Trout-O-Rees

Two Trout events are offered each weekend: (1) fish on Saturday OR (2) fish on Sunday morning.  Each December the lake at Camp Tahuaya is stocked with a truckload of Rainbow Trout from Missouri.  For 2020 we are again doubling the size of Camp Tahuaya’s annual end of December trout stocking.  Cub Scouts and parents catch and keep up to 6 Trout per person (12 Trout per parent/youth team). Cub Scouts enjoy a day of fishing with a parent, Trout-O-Ree patch, Prizes, lunch, fishing education programs.

NOTE:  Please make sure your group brings #10 OR smaller hooks. Recommended casting rigs are light 6′ or longer fishing rods rated for 4 LB to 10 LB line (2kg to 5kg) and loaded with 4 LB–5 LB test line. Shorter rods are harder to learn to cast. Bring several colors of PowerBait and #14 or #16 treble hook sizes.

Cub Scout Fishing Work Shop – Sat. only.  NEW!

To earn requirements for the Cub Scout Fishing Belt Loop / Pin. Classes will be in hour sessions starting at 9am till 3pm. Sign up sheet will be available during the day for a time schedule. Certificates of requirements completed are handed out at end of day at the campfire to take back to your Den leaders for approval. Belt Loops and Pens are not furnished. The Fishing Belt Loop & Pin is for Cub Scouts and Webelos. Webelos who are working the Sportsman Activity Pen can earn part of requirement #3.

Fishing Work Shop will include regulations & rules, outdoor code, bait a hook, catching a fish, cleaning a fish, fish habitats, types of fishing reels, tying fishing fly lures, casting 30ft, draw a fish, replace line on a reel, make a pole and line rig, artificial bait & lures. Also there will be many fishing stories told.

  • Bait: Powerbait (various colors, size #14 or #16), corn, etc.
  • Scissors or pocket knife, needle nose pliers, cleaning knife

Who can enter? Any Cub Scout or Cub Scout adult who preregisters for the race. Racers choose their check-in time and race time when they pre-register. Arrive, check-in, race, depart. The race is ongoing throughout Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Times are recorded electronically with winners announced on Monday, March 4th.

Council Pinewood Derby Race Results – Longhorn Council – Texas High Adventure Base

Rules:

All Cars must pass inspection to qualify for the race. The inspection points are as follows:

  1. The car must have been made within the current year.
  2. The width of the car shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches.
  3. The car length shall not exceed 7 inches.
  4. The weight of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces.
  5. Axles, wheels, and body wood shall be as provided in the BSA kit. Car wheels/tires shall not be sharpened to a “V” rim (must be flat).
  6. Wheel bearings, washers, and brushing are prohibited.
  7. The car shall not ride on any kind of springs.
  8. Any details added must be within width, length, and weight limits.
  9. The car must be freewheeling with no starting devices.
  10. No loose material of any kind (such as a lead shot) allowed in the car,
  11. The official number on race day must be clearly marked and visible on both side of the car.

Fees cover cost of trophies.

Fee: $15.00 per participant (for trophies) after Tuesday.
